Students from both Houston Can! Academies participated in the 1st Annual Stop the Silence® National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run on April 10th. Twelve of the students assembled a team and met at the school at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning to travel to Houston''s Emancipation Park in the "Team Village" where they joined other Houston-area teams. Houston staff members Jermaine Ruffins and Lonnie Dearman joined the students during the walk. The Team began their walk in some light rain at 10 a.m. and by 11 a.m. the Houston Can! Academy team had completed their march against Breast Cancer.
The team then boarded the school van and went to Pappasito''s Cantina to celebrate and talk about what the walk meant for each member of the Team. Two of the team members had Grandmothers that were victims of breast cancer so the walk had special significance to them.
