Austin Can Academy Provides a Fresh Start to Austin Youth in Need

May 22, 2017

A special East Austin school opened its doors to the community Friday to showcase students and educators working toward success.

Austin’s Can Academy is a recovery charter high school serving mostly youth in need. Many are students who might otherwise have dropped out of school.

“A lot of them are dealing with more than their fair share of struggles in life quite frankly. That’s what I see in the criminal courts and the shorter school day allows for them to work to help take care of their families in many instances,” said Travis County Court Judge Brandy Mueller.

The Can Academy partners with local organizations and businesses for specialized training programs.
The academy says it’s helped about 130,000 students get a second chance through its network of 13 charter schools across Texas.
