Texans Can Academies Adds Garland Campus

September 14, 2016

Texans Can Academies’ newest and sixth Dallas-area charter high school is enrolling for the fall semester. The Garland campus is located at 2256 Arapaho Road in Garland.

The new campus has the capacity to serve up to 300 students. Located near the intersection of North Garland Road and North Shiloh Road, the campus is a 24,746-square-foot building that includes a 5,400-square-feet gymnasium and full cafeteria.

Garland Can Academy, whose mascot is the Jaguars, plans to offer dual credit classes to students so they may enter college with credits that will push them ahead in their required course count, saving them money and time away from work and/or family. The high school also plans to offer endorsements for career certifications, adult literacy classes, computer and job training and English Second Language courses.

Dr. Daniel Johnson, principal, cited the opportunities ahead in the Garland community for Texans Can Academies’ newest school location.

“We are excited about opening this new campus in Garland. It allows us to reach more youth in this area and have a positive outcome on their future,” he said.

Texans Can Academies, a public high school of choice with 13 campuses statewide, proudly welcomes Dr. Daniel Johnson as Garland Can Academy’s new principal. Dr. Johnson will oversee the newly opened campus serving grades 9 – 12 along with its teachers and staff.

Johnson joins Garland Can Academy as he embarks on his 33rd year in public education. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of North Texas, a Master of Science degree in educational administration from Texas A&M Commerce and a doctoral degree in public policy from the University of Texas, Dallas.

Johnson has eight years of experience as a middle school teacher and has served as a principal for all school levels. His schools have texanscanacademylogoreceived awards such as the National Certificate of Educational Achievement Higher Achieving Award for three consecutive years; he received the 1994 Teacher of the Year award and has served as part of the Texas School Improvement Initiative with the Texas Education Agency.

The school will enroll students in grades nine through 12 and offer two half-day programs every weekday. Students are able to attend school, four hours in the morning or in the afternoon to allow them time to work if needed. The school’s student-to-teacher ratio average will be 17:1 with one adviser/social worker on staff for every 45 students enrolled.

Garland Can Academy will be the eighth public charter school to serve the city of Garland, which has a population of 234,566 residents. Garland has 13,745 students, 54.4 percent of whom receive reduced lunch. Garland Can Academy will offer a new school choice to students in need in the Garland area.
