Dallas Can Academy Partners with Caring for Children’s Care Van Program

November 15, 2016

One in four children in Texas are not properly immunized, most of these are uninsured and medically underserved students who do not otherwise have access to necessary immunizations and vaccines. In the state of Texas the required immunizations to enroll in high school include Tetanus vaccine, Hepatitis vaccines and Meningitis vaccine among others. Dallas Can Academies has partnered with The Caring For Children Foundation of Texas, Inc. and their Care Van Program to procure these necessary immunizations for the students of Dallas Can Academy.

According to Unicef, vaccines are protecting more students than ever before, but 19.4 million students and children nationally miss out on the basic vaccines and immunizations they need to stay healthy. Low immunization levels compromise gains in all areas of health, the underprivileged and most vulnerable students who need immunization the most continue to be the least likely to receive it; Dallas Can Academy and the Care Van Program are partnering to transform these statistics for the better.

Students in need of immunizations will be able to receive the medical help they need in the first semester of the school year to keep them healthy throughout the year, including the flu shot this year. The Care Van Program is coordinated through the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas, Inc. with thanks to lead sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and provides immunizations and free health screenings to the uninsured and medically underserved students within our communities. The Care Van Program has a fleet of 10 vans that visit schools and other organizations in the communities where at-risk families live and work.

“Providing this service to our students is an obvious choice for us,” said Texans Can CEO, Richard Marquez. “Creating a healthy and safe environment for our students leads to more time in the classroom which leads to more graduates, these students are getting necessary healthcare to enroll at our campuses as well as moving on to college campuses.”

The Care Van Program has provided over 1.2 million immunizations to over 811,000 children and students. Immunizing children is one of the most direct, simple and least expensive ways to build healthier futures for families in Texas. Federal law requires shots for students to enroll in school, if Dallas Can Students do not have these shots, the school and the immunization van will provide them.

“Any chance we have to build a partnership to lead to a healthier future for students in Texas, we are excited,” said Terri Lyons lead nurse from Caring For Children, Inc. “We are proud to bring our vans to Dallas Can Academy campuses.”
