Texans Can Academies – Dallas Student Throws First Pitch Thanks to Cars for Kids

September 02, 2021

A Texans Can Academies – Dallas student just had a night to remember.

Benjamin Blancas, student at Texans Can – Dallas North, was privileged to throw out the first pitch of the three-game series of the Mariners vs. the Rangers at Globe Life Field.

Blancas was accompanied by his family, Dallas North principal, Rufus Johnson, and Dallas North Student Advocate, Ms. Villareal; all there to cheer him on. Thanks to Cars for Kids, Blancas experienced full VIP treatment, including parking passes, food, drinks, and can’t-be-beat dugout seats.

The highlight of Blancas’ evening came when he was called to the pitcher’s mound, and Number 72, Rangers Captain, stood ready at the plate. As he threw the pitch, Blancas sported a personalized jersey made specially for the occasion.

“Mom and Dad shed tears of joy and pride when he came off the field after the pitch,” Johnson said. “Benjamin held back his tears, but was really emotional and happy! I was so proud to just be part of the entire experience.”

Making these experiences possible is just one way Cars for Kids, the official car-donation program of the Texas Rangers, benefits the students of Texans Can Academies, which offers a supportive environment for students pursuing a second chance at a high school diploma. That support for the students is felt at all levels of both Cars for Kids and the dropout recovery school.

“My heart was racing when Benjamin threw out that pitch as if I was his coach!” Johnson said. “This is what it’s all about: changing student lives and creating memories.”
