Texans Can Academy – San Antonio Provides Free Summer Meals and More To Students in Need

June 26, 2019

Texans Can Academy – San Antonio is providing free summer meals to students and their families at its recently opened, new on-campus food pantry. The pantry serves students that need food and other essential items and ensures students can provide what is needed not just for themselves, but for their families as well. Any student that is enrolled at Texans Can Academy – San Antonio has the opportunity to shop at the food pantry and gather items they need at no cost.

Students do not need to be enrolled in summer courses to get items from the food pantry during the summer; if they are enrolled for the upcoming school year, they are also eligible to visit the pantry for necessary items at no cost. The pantry offers much more than just food, including toiletries, baby food and supplies, pet food and other necessities. “Texans Can Academy – San Antonio is excited for students to be able to access the recently opened food pantry during the summer,” said Rachel Castro, development director at Texans Can Academy – San Antonio. “We are happy to help students with services provided by the school that help outside their school life like the food pantry. Texans Can Academies cares for the whole student and it is important that students receive all resources available to them so that they can be successful with their classwork.” As a San Antonio Food Bank partner, the school works with the food bank to order food and pick up shipments as needed. Texans Can Academy – San Antonio was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Harvey E. Najim Foundation to fund the food pantry for the 2018-19 school year, which allows the campus to purchase food and other necessary items through the food bank at a reduced rate. The funds also allowed the school to purchase a freezer for the food pantry.

In addition to the food pantry, the San Antonio campus recently began offering school uniform assistance to students who could not afford their own. In the past, new students who were unable to get uniforms right away would have to wait several days before they could begin attending classes. The process will now be streamlined and the school will offer qualified students uniforms during orientation. “Texans Can Academies strives to be a value-added organization to students both at school and away from school,” said Richard Marquez, president and CEO of Texans Can Academies. “Our schools believe in meeting students’ needs in school with rich academic curriculum, small classroom sizes and one-on-one tutoring when needed. We also understand that if we take care of the child away from school, their chances of doing well in school greatly increase.” Each campus offers many services to students as part of their mission to provide every student the opportunity to pursue their dreams while removing barriers that keep them from attaining their education. Some of the services provided include 24/7 counseling, Care Vans that provide immunizations and flu shots, daycare services, eye exams and eyeglasses, transportation and more. Advisors at Texans Can Academy – San Antonio are making new students aware of all the services provided by the school, including the new food pantry and uniform assistance.
