Child Find

Parent and child holding heart in hand. Health care, family insurance concept

Texans Can Academies is ready, willing and able to identify and serve all children with disabilities residing within its jurisdiction who are in need of special education and related services.

The term “special education” means specially-designed instruction, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. The term “child with a disability” means the child must meet eligibility criteria for at least one of the 13 disabilities specifically outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and, as a result of the disability, has a need for specially designed instruction that can only be provided through special education. Parents who suspect that their child may have a disability should contact their child’s teacher or a campus administrator to discuss a referral to the campus team.

The district’s child find duties also extend to students with disabilities who are placed in private schools or home schools by their parents. If the child’s parents or teachers suspect a disability, please contact Olga Paniagua from 8:00am to 5:00pm at 214-875-4108 or at opaniagua@texanscan.org.

What is Child Find?

Child Find is a federal mandate under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It requires local education agencies (LEAs), which include public school districts and charter schools, to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities residing within their jurisdictions who need special education and related services. (34 CFR §300.111—Child find)

Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities.

A student identified through child find is not automatically guaranteed services under IDEA. First, a full and individual initial evaluation (FIIE) of the child must be conducted.
