AVID

Dallas, TX | October 2026

DALLAS, TEXAS — Students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Texans Can Academies – Oak Cliff are making a difference in their community this October through a meaningful service project focused on supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in the Dallas area.

Under the guidance of AVID teachers Mr. Torres and Ms. Bailey, and with the support of Principal Marrero and Academic Dean Mr. Robinson, students are coming together to prepare sandwiches for individuals facing food insecurity and homelessness.

As part of their October Community Service Initiative, AVID scholars are demonstrating the importance of compassion, leadership, teamwork, and community responsibility. This project encourages students to look beyond the classroom and recognize the positive impact they can make through simple acts of kindness and service.

The sandwich-making initiative provides students with hands-on opportunities to develop empathy, strengthen leadership skills, and understand the value of helping others. Through the dedication of Mr. Torres and Ms. Bailey, AVID scholars are learning that academic success goes hand in hand with character development, compassion, and a commitment to serving their community.

One Sandwich. One Act of Kindness. One Stronger Community.

With the encouragement and leadership of Principal Marrero and Academic Dean Mr. Robinson, Texans Can Academies – Oak Cliff continues to promote opportunities that empower students to make meaningful contributions both inside and outside the classroom.

Through this October service project, AVID scholars hope to inspire others throughout Dallas to embrace the spirit of volunteerism and recognize that even the smallest acts of generosity can make a lasting difference.
